Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX vision of centralized control vs Satoshi Nakamoto's vision of decentralized legdering systems.
According to a new report, crypto derivatives exchange FTX is in talks to acquire Bithumb, one of South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchanges.
The deal would see Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX taking over Bithumb's operations, with the South Korean exchange becoming a subsidiary of the larger company.
While the details of the deal are still being negotiated, it is believed that FTX would pay around $700 million for Bithumb. Alhough there has been no official word from either FTX or Bithumb on the reports of a possible acquisition.
This would be a major acquisition for FTX, which has only been in operation since 2019. It would also be a huge coup for Bankman-Fried, who has been on a mission to consolidate the cryptocurrency exchange industry. We have seen SBF name, where ever there has been corruption, bankruptcies, collapse of companies and scandals. It is unclear his involvement, although it clear, he is eyeing dominance of the crypto space.
While the acquisition of Bithumb by FTX may be positive for SBF, it is unclear if it would truly benefit the crypto industry as a whole. One of the major concerns is that it would give more centralized power to one man, which has been proven time and time again to be unhealthy. Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, designed it specifically to avoid centralized control and corruption - which is exactly what such moves would lead to. It is important to remember the purpose of cryptocurrency and not let greed get in the way of that. Otherwise, we risk losing everything that makes crypto so special.
Satoshi Nakamoto's vision for Bitcoin was to create a decentralized network that could function without the need for third-party trust. By its very nature, this would prevent the corruption and greed that have come to typify centralized systems. However, in recent years, we have seen a trend of large exchanges and market makers,= taking full control of the industry. While the media is selling such acquisitions as being positive, the reality is, day by day, greed is consuming users and the entire purpose of decentralized networks and trust-less exchanges is being destroyed. If we are to return to Satoshi's vision of a truly decentralized system, we must put a stop to this trend of corporate greed.
Another bailout by SBF is a recent announcement that Customers of bankrupt crypto lender Voyager have been thrown a lifeline from digital assets exchange FTX, offering to provide them with early-access liquidity. Under a joint proposal between FTX and West Realm Shires — owner and operator of FTX US and Alameda Ventures — Voyager customers will be able to claim a portion of their funds that were frozen more than three weeks ago. It’s not yet clear how much each customer will be able to withdrawal.
All current moves by SBF's teams, would give SBF a significant foothold in the industry, and could bring more a turn to a total dominance liquidity system, complete centralized power. With such acquisition, FTX would become one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, and would cement Bankman-Fried's position as the major player in the space.
It is crucial that users who believe in a decentralized future and DAO's , not fall for the black knight turns white knight marketing strategy. The future of Satoshi vision and many who believe in decentralized ledgering networks, is at risk. Too often we have seen centralized entities, put on a united public face, In many cases the figure who was played a part in the collapse, emerges as the savior, The antichrist strategy. This type of centralized corruption is what Satoshi set out to end when he created Bitcoin. We must learn from history, so that it doesn't repeat itself. Let us not be taken advantage of by those who seek to control us through our greed and desperation during vulnerable times.
There has been no official word from either FTX or Bithumb on the reports of a possible acquisition, but we will be sure to update this story if and when more information becomes available.
