A growing number of American banks covered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation are looking into the world of digital currencies in response to rising customer demand for bitcoin and other cryptocurrency-related services. The pattern shows how crypto assets and related goods and services are linked to the regulated financial system.

As of January 2023, the FDIC reported that 136 banks were either intending or were engaged in different crypto-related efforts, and that around 52 million Americans had invested in bitcoin and other sorts of crypto assets.

A study detailing the expanding engagement of banks in the digital assets market was released on February 17 by the Office of Inspector General, an independent entity housed inside multiple US federal departments.

The research emphasizes the necessity of ensuring that their policies and procedures take into account the risks associated with digital assets, particularly with regard to deposit insurance, and advocates for appropriate recommendations for lenders operating under the FDIC mandate. The FDIC does not directly oversee or control cryptocurrencies, but it does offer insurance to safeguard depositors in the event of bank collapses, and there have been concerns regarding the possibility of the FDIC regulating bitcoin custodians.

Similar to how banks keep conventional assets like cash and securities, cryptocurrency custodians maintain digital assets on behalf of others.
