With US crypto firms seeking alternatives to Silvergate and Signature Bank, Europe has an opportunity to capitalize on the situation. The US has traditionally been at the forefront of crypto innovation, but the lack of regulatory clarity and new regulatory headwinds in the country may cause crypto firms to look for alternatives elsewhere. Europe, with its regulatory clarity and easier fiat payment rails through MiCA, is an attractive option. Furthermore, the reliance on stablecoins rather than fiat means that the banking cutoff in the US will hurt crypto investors less, but will affect the businesses behind the platforms. Euro volumes are showing that the euro may benefit from a US crypto banking cutoff. The question remains whether a US bank will come forward and accept crypto deposits. Smaller banks may be more willing to do so, but they will need to diversify their deposits to ensure protection from a bank run. In the meantime, Europe has a window of opportunity to gain relevance in the crypto industry.
