According to co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, Solana Labs is planning to enhance its software upgrade process to improve network reliability and uptime. Yakovenko emphasized that delivering a fast, reliable, and scalable network is a top priority to move towards a better, decentralized web. The issues encountered during last week's 1.14 network update highlighted the challenges in maintaining stability during major updates. Prior to the 1.14 release, Solana's core engineers were addressing issues that impacted the network's speed and usability. These included technical problems such as invalid gas metering, lack of flow control for transactions, and lack of fee markets. These issues were prioritized to enhance user experience. However, after the latest release, the core engineers plan to bring in additional external developers and auditors to test and identify any potential exploits. They will also establish an adversarial team, consisting of almost a third of the Solana Labs core engineering team. The core engineers will continue to support external teams, such as Jump Crypto's Firedancer team, which is building a second validator client to enhance the network's throughput, efficiency, and resiliency. In addition, the core engineers plan to improve the restart process by making nodes automatically discover the latest confirmed slot and share the ledger with each other if it's missing. Solana Labs and third-party core engineering teams have been working to enhance the network's stability over the past year. However, the network recently experienced a lengthy weekend outage, with sluggish transaction processing leading to almost complete shutdown of activity on Solana. Investigations into the reason for the network-wide outage are still ongoing.
