Owen Lau, an analyst at Oppenheimer, has downgraded his rating on Coinbase from "outperform" to "perform" after the cryptocurrency exchange disclosed receiving a Wells notice from the SEC. Lau also expressed concerns about the negative regulatory environment for the digital asset industry, as highlighted in the recent Economic Report of the President.

He believes that this could limit the growth of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, and questioned the fairness of enforcement actions. Lau has moved to the sidelines due to these concerns, even though Coinbase's stock has performed well so far this year. Despite the strong demand for bitcoin and alternative financial systems, Lau warned that their success could also pose risks.
