On Wednesday, U.S. authorities transferred $1 billion worth of bitcoin recovered from a dark web hack to new wallet addresses, including one owned by Coinbase, which caused investors to worry that the market would experience intense sell pressures that could drive down the token's price.

The government usually sells seized assets at auction, so the possibility of an open market sale caused concerns about the potential negative impact on bitcoin prices. However, fears that bitcoin prices could take a hit are not entirely unjustified, says a researcher at crypto markets analysis firm Kaiko.

The market's composition, including who token holders are and how many tokens they hold, will likely influence the extent to which the market reacts to a potential market-moving event.

The government's plans for the recently transferred bitcoin remain unknown, including whether authorities will auction off the bitcoin or consolidate the assets at some point.
