On Thursday, the value of Bitcoin approached $28,000 as traders processed the interest rate hike by the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) on Wednesday, which had been expected. This decision underlined the Federal Reserve's worries about persistent inflation and their commitment to addressing it. Bitcoin's value initially dropped below $27,000 after the FOMC meeting as traders took profits following a 20% increase over a seven-day period.
However, traders who had bet on Bitcoin futures took on losses of more than $150 million due to the volatility, with billions of unsettled contracts being wiped out. Over 75% of these losses came from traders who had made long bets, hoping for price increases but were caught off-guard. Ether's value also fell but began to recover on Thursday, while other significant cryptocurrencies like XRP dropped 8% due to profit-taking following a favorable sentiment earlier this week.
Despite this, Bitcoin's value has since bounced back, with some remaining optimistic about the asset's potential to provide stability and value in the medium term.
