The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued a warning to investors about the potential risks of investing in crypto asset securities offered by unregistered firms. The SEC cautioned that such offerings may not comply with US laws and may not provide essential information like audited financial statements for making informed investment decisions. The SEC has been tightening regulations in the crypto industry, particularly after the collapse of FTX in November 2022. Coinbase also received a Wells notice, indicating that SEC staff intend to recommend enforcement action against the exchange. Additionally, the SEC advised investors to be cautious of "proof of reserves" services offered by some crypto exchanges, which may not be a reliable substitute for audited financial statements.
