The price of Lido's LDO token dropped 10% after rumors surfaced that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had issued a Wells Notice to the largest Ethereum staking service. A Wells Notice is a letter detailing charges that the SEC is considering bringing against a recipient. The rumor caused panic on social media and at ETHDenver, a large crypto industry gathering. However, David Hoffman, who initially spread the rumor, later retracted his statement. Despite this, the market still reacted, and LDO's price fell. Lido is a liquid staking platform that accounts for 31% of all staked ether, and its $8 billion staked via Ethereum makes it the largest Ethereum staker. This incident comes amidst a broader SEC crackdown on the crypto industry, which has led to regulatory uncertainty for similar services.
